Rashomon I

Rashomon

I had to follow Dia to an oil palm plantation last weekend for a business dealings that he had to carry out. It was the first time I've ever been to a plantation. It was shocking on my part.

I've never knew how a oil plantation look like before this. As a Singapore-born, I couldn't care less about plantation life and the people who live in it.

From my observation, most of workers live in houses that are too small for an ordinary family to live in and they live in abject poverty. Most of the workers in the plantation are Indians, although I do see a couple of Malay boys on their kapcais. I was told, the foreign workers cannot even leave the plantation. I felt sorry for them somehow.
